Common questions

More answers are on the questions page.

Can you visit me at home to make new dentures?

Yes. Home visits in the Maidenhead area are free. Outside Maidenhead there may be a charge. If you are not sure, call 01628 674 221 and you will be told before anyone travels.

I am nervous about dental treatment. Can you work with that?

Yes. Appointments can be booked longer so you can take breaks and go at your own pace. Tell Chris when you book.

Will my new dentures look like natural teeth?

Tooth shape and colour are chosen for you, and the teeth are set where your own teeth were, so the denture supports the lip and face. Partials are made to blend with the teeth you still have.

Will my new dentures be comfortable?

They are made to fit as closely as they can. A new denture can feel odd for a few days. Sore spots are eased by adjusting the denture. Do not try to adjust it yourself. Call and that visit will be arranged.

How should I look after my dentures?

Clean them over a bowl of water or a folded towel, in case you drop them. Keep them moist so they do not warp. If they dry out, soak them in clean water before wearing them again. If you leave them out at night, use clean water or a denture soak and follow the soak instructions. Rinse them regularly. No denture is guaranteed against being dropped.

Should I wear my dentures at night?

It is generally better to leave them out at night so the gums can rest, especially if you grind your teeth. If you prefer to wear them, clean them before sleep and when you wake, and take them out for part of the day. Brush the gums with a very soft toothbrush. Store dentures that are out overnight in cold water, not hot water.

Will new dentures affect my speech?

Speech can feel different at first, especially s and f sounds. Reading aloud, and counting from 65 to 70, helps those sounds. Extra saliva is common and settles. Sip water, or suck a boiled sweet. Call if you are worried.

What is the best way to clean my dentures?

A soft brush and warm soapy water. If you are unsure which soak to use, ask at the studio.

Will I be able to eat the foods I want?

Most people need a short time on softer food, then build back up. Patients have said they got back to apples, toffees and ordinary meals. If something still catches, come back for an adjustment rather than putting up with it.

How long will my dentures last?

There is no fixed lifespan. Ask for a free denture health check if they are loose, you have started using adhesive, your face no longer feels supported, your mouth is sore, you have had several repairs, or the teeth are worn or stained.

How long will it take to make new dentures?

It depends on the denture and the case. There is a faster service when you need one, and an emergency repair service. Call and describe what you need rather than guessing a number of days.

What types of dentures are there?

Complete dentures replace all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Partials replace some of them. Acrylic partials start at £400, cobalt chrome at £500, and a complete upper and lower acrylic set at £600. An immediate denture can be fitted when teeth are removed. The free consultation is where Chris says which of these fits your mouth.

Will I look different?

The teeth are chosen and set for your face. The aim is support for the lip, and a colour and shape that suit you, rather than a standard set.

How soon can a denture be fitted after teeth are taken out?

Often straight away. That is an immediate denture, so you are not without teeth while the gums heal. Gums and bone can shrink, especially in the first six months, and the denture may then need relining, adjusting or replacing. Sometimes it is better to wait. A dentist takes the teeth out. Chris makes the denture.

Do I need to replace a missing tooth?

A gap can affect eating and speech, and some people dislike the look of it. Replacing it is your decision. A partial is one way to do it, and the consultation is free.

Do you place dental implants?

No. A dentist places implants. Chris makes dentures, including dentures that fit onto implants a dentist has already placed.
